“Leader of Quality Education Innovation”

In 2009, the Autism Learning Lab was opened at the Faculty of Education with 9 teachers and only 15 students with autism using research grant allocations. After 2 years, the Autism Learning Lab continued its operations using the money from the monthly student fees to cover operating costs and teacher salaries. In May 2018, the Autism Learning Lab moved to the Tunas UKM building, which provided an opportunity for 48 students with special needs to receive early intervention services in an environment that was more conducive to social and emotional development and communication. The Autism Learning Lab provides early intervention services to 42 students with special needs aged 4 to 9 years and the Provokasional Program to 6 students with special needs aged between 11 and 18 years. As of today, the Autism Learning Lab has 58 students with special needs and also 13 teachers and 1 manager.

The Autism Learning Lab conducts Individual Education Plans (IPPs) to plan learning activities according to the needs of students and implement interventions that have been planned for each student. Among the interventions carried out are Self-Management (e.g.: toilet training, brushing teeth) Behavior Modification (e.g.: tantrums, biting) and Pre-academic (e.g.: writing, arithmetic and reading skills) based on modules developed by the Autism Learning Lab. To date, the Autism Lab has successfully produced 7 books and 6 of them have been registered under Intellectual Property Protection (Copyright) as well as 3 modules. One innovative product has been registered under Intellectual Property Protection (Copyright) while 2 more are in the application process.

The Lab is also involved in community activities such as parenting training workshops, either organized by the Lab or invited as a panel or special speaker. On 09 April 2018, the Autism Learning Lab won the 2018 IPT Autism Social Responsibility Award at the Dari Hati ke Hati Awards Ceremony organized by Bank Rakyat. To cover the operating costs of the Autism Learning Lab, the Faculty of Education has organized charity programs to raise funds, namely the UKM Autism Charity Golf (2015), the UKM Autism Charity Golf (2012) and the Autism Charity Dinner (2011).
